Enhancing Social Cohesion & Community Resilience to Climate-Induced Mobility in Southern Iraq

Location: Basra - Al Qurna
Status: Ongoing
NABU, through partership with Iraqi Al-firdaws Society, provides research, technical advisory, conflict sensitivity inputs, stakeholder engagement, desk reviews, field coordination, training content, and reporting.
Our work includes designing assessment tools, conducting baseline analysis, preparing buy-in documentation, and supporting field enumerators.

Community Engagement for Ecosystems Adaptation (Thi Qar – Al Chybaysh)

The project implemented with the support of UNDP, aims to strengthen environmental resilience and sustainable livelihoods in the Mesopotamian Marshes. The Iraqi Al-Firdaws Society (IFS) serves as the primary implementing partner responsible for overseeing field execution, community mobilization, and delivery of project activities. NABU for Research and Development acts as the technical implementing entity, leading assessments, research, training design, and the development of tools and methodologies. In Al-Chybaysh, the Chybaysh Organization for Environmental Tourism (COET) contributes as a key local partner, supporting community outreach, access to marshland villages, and coordination with local stakeholders. Together, we work to advance ecosystem adaptation, traditional knowledge preservation, and sustainable practices in the marshlands.

Al-Sadr City Training – Marketing Through Your Phone. (Baghdad)
NABU delivered a targeted, practical training session in Al-Sadr City in coolaboration with al Sadr City Youth and Sport Dirctorate focused on:
“Marketing Through Your Phone”
This session was designed for small business owners and home-based entrepreneurs, teaching them:

How to market products using only a mobile phone

How to enhance visibility and sales without financial investment
The training helped participants strengthen digital marketing skills and improve their capacity to grow their businesses from home.

Buidling a Mudhif as an Eco-Tourism Center – Al-Chibayish
This project is implemented by NABU for Research and Development in close cooperation with Al‑Chibayish Environmental Tourism Organization (COET), to support environmentally responsible tourism in the Mesopotamian Marshes. The initiative aims to preserve cultural heritage, promote sustainable livelihoods, and enhance local capacities through eco-tourism practices that respect the unique environmental and social context of the marshlands. The project is funded by GIZ and the French Embassy in Iraq, reflecting strong international support for community-driven, heritage-based, and environmentally sustainable development in southern Iraq.
